Ashland Johnson is Athlete Ally's Director of Policy and Campaigns, working to activate athletic communities to protect and promote LGBT equality across the country.
Prior to Athlete Ally, Ashland was Policy Counsel for the National Center for Lesbian Rights, working with NCLR’s Sports Project to eliminate discrimination in sport. She also advanced NCLR's federal policy priorities in many areas, including housing, family law, health, and employment.
Ashland has also served as a Health and Reproductive Rights Fellow at the National Women’s Law Center where she worked on reproductive justice initiatives and expanding women’s access to reproductive health care. She also clerked for Lambda Legal, where she assisted with litigation and policy initiatives to advance LGBT equality. Additionally, she was a Holley Law Fellow at the LGBT Task Force, where she advocated for transgender-inclusive policies on the federal and state level.
Ashland is a graduate of Furman University where she was a member of the varsity women's basketball team. She graduated with a law degree from the University of Georgia School of Law. While in law school, Ashland was a Point Scholar and a Bill and Anne Shepherd Equal Rights Scholar. She was also an Articles Editor for the Georgia Journal of International and Comparative Law. Ashland is a former member of the National Board of Directors for the American Constitution Society (ACS) and currently serves on the board of ACS’s Wahington D.C. Lawyer’s Chapter.
