Tim Bresnahan was born and raised in a small town in southern Maine. A turbulent home life led him to find shelter in academics and extracurricular activities, where he excelled from an early age. Tim’s desire to help others in broken homes led him to volunteer as a family mediator — the first spark of his passion for social advocacy and community outreach.

At Georgetown University, Tim finally found an environment where he felt comfortable enough to come out of the closet as a gay man. As manager of a campus theatre, he used the stage as a vehicle for promoting social awareness. Many of the plays Tim helped to produce — including Angels in America and The Laramie Project — aspired to increase visibility of issues affecting the GLBT community.

His work on The Laramie Project first introduced Tim to the Human Rights Campaign (HRC). Hired as an intern, he was quickly promoted to a full-time staff member at HRC. His involvement with HRC allowed him to participate in GLBT civil rights battles, including the fight against the Federal Marriage Amendment. His time at HRC inspired Tim to pursue a law degree and continue to fight discrimination on a large scale.
