Marcie was born and raised in southern Mississippi. She graduated from Louisiana State University Honors College receiving a B.A. in Women's Studies and Philosophy. She then continued her education at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) where she completed a masters in both Public Health and Social Work.
Marcie has a long list of accomplishments including LSU Women's Center Advisory Board Chair, the National Michael Schwerner Activist Award, the first coordinator of UNC's LGBT Center, a Public Service Fellow for her documentary film work on LGBT families in North Carolina, and a recipient of the 2007 Student Undergraduate Teaching Award presented annually to three UNC professors by the UNC undergraduate student body.
As a Research Associate for the first federally funded HIV research project to address the needs of young Black MSM in the southeast, Marcie has focused her attention on assisting health care providers in becoming more competent in understanding and supporting the needs of this population in North Carolina.
Marcie is currently a Lyle Jones Dissertation Fellow, completing her PhD this May in Social Work at UNC-CH where she also serves as Adjunct Faculty teaching courses on civic engagement, service learning, and community organizing.
Marcie is committed to continuing to work with and for LGBT youth and families in the South. Her biggest commitment now is to her partner of 12 years, Chantelle, and their 6-month-old daughter. In the future, she hopes to develop a training and retreat center focusing on LGBT youth leadership development in North Carolina.
