Shane Du
Scholar Class - 2012
Shane grew up in conservative rural China. Battling incessant harassment because of her gender expression, she found solace in academics. Shane obtained a BS degree in Chemical Engineering and came to the U.S. with a graduate engineering scholarship. Shane’s active involvement with the LGBTQ community began when she served as a pride events leader at the University of Kansas LGBT Ally. She continued to promote LGBTQ acceptance in the workplace while working as an openly LGBTQ manager at Farmers Insurance Group. Based on her experiences and that of her LGBTQ friends, Shane is deeply concerned about the lack of access to compassionate healthcare for LGBTQ patients and is determined to lead positive changes to LGBTQ healthcare. She will attend medical school in fall 2012 and aspires to work as a primary care physician caring for LGBT patients.
