Meet Point Scholar Ranen Miao

Written by Andrae Vigil-Romero | January 13, 2021

What college/university are you attending and what made you choose it?

Washington University in St. Louis; I wanted to leave the east coast for college and to explore the Midwest. I've gotten to see the Iowa Caucuses and work with Midwestern political campaigns, which has been such a blessing.

Which program are you pursuing and what about the subject intrigues you most?

I'm pursuing political science and sociology. I believe understanding the systems we live in will empower us with the knowledge and ability to create meaningful change and create a society that is more inclusive, equitable, and compassionate.

What are your career aspirations?

One day, I hope to go into public service: whether it's serving as a diplomat or working as a lawmaker, I hope to be creating structural progress through the political process.

What is a fun fact about you that few people know?

I've never had coffee before!

What is your favorite book/movie/song and why?

I love "Lean on Me" because I think the message about reaching out to others when we need it and being there for our loved ones gets to the core of the human condition: our inherent interconnectedness, and how we are so much more alike than we are different.

What is your current favorite streaming binge?

I just finished Avatar, the Last Airbender, and am now watching Korra! I also loved watching Scandal, The Politician, and Parks and Recreation.

In your spare time, what do you enjoy doing?

I love watching Netflix, spending time with friends, and learning new things!

As a Point Scholar, what is your message to other LGBTQ+ students?

Remember that you are valuable, beautiful, and loved. There will be people out there who want us to question our worth, but never stop shining – prove them wrong with your brilliance.
