Why did you choose your major or program?

I had grown up always interested in healthcare. It wasn't until high school when I started to feel more comfortable with my intersecting identities and developed a deep passion for social equity. When looking at majors in college, I wanted to find a discipline that seemingly blended social justice and healthcare; thus, I settled on Public Health. As I took more and more pre-med classes, I felt that the gained scientific knowledge well complemented my coursework in public health. I then decided to major in both Public Health and Biology.

What is a fun fact about you that few people know?

I went through 7 years of rigorous classical clarinet training. In fact, I went to the performing arts high school on which the movie Step Up is based.

What is your favorite song and why?

It changes weekly! Right now, I'm bumping "Louie Bag" by Yebba featuring Smino. It's just a smooth, silky song. It feels right.

What is your current favorite streaming binge and why?

Shamelessly streaming Gossip Girl (2021) and the OG Gossip Girl concurrently. Enough said for fear of embarrassment!

What is your favorite hobby or activity you like to do in your free time?

I've lately been in my nature era and so I've been going on lots of hikes. Thankfully I'm never short of a hike in the Bay Area.

How have your identities (race, ethnicity, sexuality, gender) affected your college experience?

It's a symbiotic relationship in that my identities shaped my experiences in college but also my experiences helped me better understand my identities and other folks' perception of them. I've developed a great appreciation for cultivating community––finding peers who looked like me and/or had similar experiences as me greatly helped me get through my four years of undergrad.

How do you practice self-care?

I practice self-care by first identifying and naming whatever I'm feeling. Doing so allows me to accept my feelings and allow them to serve their purpose(s). I like to give myself time to process my emotions and and practice affirmations to get in a better headspace.

How are you adjusting to the "new normal" as we're emerging from this pandemic? Do you have any tips for other students who are going back to college this semester?

I can't say I've fully adjusted, especially as things are so tumultuous right now. I'm just trying to remain grounded and look to my community of friends and family when the going gets tough. I'd encourage everyone to try to do the same. The past 1.5 years have been difficult, but I was/am aided by my support system.

This post’s responses were submitted by Kelvin Moore, Jr. (He/Him).

Kelvin is currently studying medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. Read more about the Point Flagship Scholarship for LGBTQ students program here.
