Being able to help her community was Amaris’s main goal for going to college. As a high school student, she excelled in this by founding her school’s first Latinx Student Union in order to promote a safe environment for like-minded Latinx students to be able to participate in community service. She was a part of East Side Union High School District’s Student Governing Board where she was able to spread awareness about safety around sexual violence in her district, as well as promote equity for BIPOC students. As a new college student, she is working towards her degree in linguistics in order to be able to become a Spanish and Deaf specializing speech-language pathologist. To aid in this goal, she has joined UC Berkeley’s American Sign Language Club where she has become outreach director. In this position of outreach director, she has been able to coordinate engaging, prominent speakers in the Deaf and hard of hearing community to speak at ASL club events.
