Darnell grew up in Fayetteville, North Carolina as the oldest of five children. He loves sports, especially basketball, which he has played most of his life. Darnell experienced many challenges as a young gay man who loves sports. He was constantly bullied on and off the basketball court, and in due course, gave up playing the sport. Eventually he became comfortable with his authentic self and he joined the basketball team again. He also joined other supportive organizations and helped create a GSA at his high school. Darnell is a member of the National Gay Basketball Association, Human Rights Campaign, and the Ballroom/Vogue community. He has volunteered with various organizations to help end the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and he has been an advocate providing support to unhoused youth within the LGBTQIA+ community. Darnell is enrolled at Atlanta Technical College and is majoring in the Physical Therapy Assistant program. Upon completion of his program, he aims to transfer to Georgia State University to obtain an undergraduate degree as well as a graduate degree. As a physical therapist, he wants to create programs that assist LGBTQIA+ patients with the cost of visits. He would also like to create an advocacy group that makes physical therapists aware of the health disparities within the LGBTQIA+ community.
