BIPOC

Fer is a Latino and queer international student pursuing an associate degree in computer science. Originally from Nicaragua, they graduated from German Nicaraguan High School in 2018 after experiencing the “deadliest civil conflict since the end of the Nicaraguan Revolution.” With a passion for both the arts and mathematics, they pursued a bachelor’s degree in economics in their home country, funded entirely through their work as an art illustrator. Yet, because of the Nicaraguan political situation, in 2021, Fer left their home country and started all over again in the United States as an international student. Today, they spend their time engaged in different STEM academic clubs advocating for the inclusion of underrepresented communities. As a student leader, they seek to spread opportunities to others and teach through example. They hope to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in computer science in the future to work in tech at Google or Microsoft. Fer’s biggest goal is to be successful enough to give back to those who experience the challenges they did.
