Gigi Andrews is a 33-year-old student at Grossmont Community College in El Cajon, California. Coming out as gay at fourteen wasn’t easy for her. She was bullied and harassed to the point that she dropped out of high school and received her GED instead. At 21, Gigi was diagnosed with HIV, which left her devastated. Coming out again as transgender in her mid-20s wasn’t easy either. Overcoming such adversity has given her the courage to persevere when times get tough. Gigi has done public speaking gigs at UCSD on the topic of HIV. She has completed cosmetology school and has received a cosmetology license. Despite the immense amount of adversity that she has faced in her life, Gigi has been able to take that adversity and turn it around to be a productive, contributing member to society. Having worked as a peer counselor in a clinical setting, Gigi wants further her career in mental health and become a licensed clinical psychologist. Gigi plants on receiving an AA in psychology from Grossmont College in the spring of 2020, then transfer to a UC or California State University in the fall of 2020 to pursue a master’s degree in psychology.
