Liberal Arts

Community College

David H. Steward & M. Pierre Friedrichs Scholarship

Henry was born and raised in Binghamton, New York and moved to the Finger Lakes region shortly after coming out as transgender in middle school. He has fallen in love with the Ithaca area, where he currently lives, and especially its community, which fosters an atmosphere of inclusivity and activism in various groups both on and off its local campuses. Thanks to his love of his current home and the endless support of his close family, Henry has been able to overcome and/or manage several severe physical and mental health issues. He is currently a thriving student at SUNY Broome Community College and is looking forward to returning to campus in Fall 2021. Henry was also elected Officer of Service for Phi Theta Kappa’s Mu Eta chapter for the 2021-2022 academic year, and hopes to use his position to help uplift his fellow LGBTQ+ students and further various social issues on his campus. After graduating in May 2022, Henry hopes to transfer into a two-year bachelor’s degree program in history. He also plans on pursuing several advanced degrees in British history, with a focus in Victorian studies and the British Empire. Henry’s dream is to use his passion for history as a lens to help his peers see the origins of modern issues and oppressions, creating a foundation for activism and social change.
