Jessie Stevens was born in Chicago and is a first-generation college student attending Malcolm X College as of Fall 2021. After graduating from high school, Jessie came out as gay. Jessie’s grandmother died of HIV/AIDS, and he knew then that he wanted to make a difference in the lives of individuals impacted by and living with HIV/AIDS. Jessie got the opportunity to work with the LGBTQ community through a Community Health Apprenticeship Program in Chicago. He learned HIV history, current best practices for STI testing, harm reduction techniques, and outreach involvement. Jessie continues to study toward his social work degree while advocating, establishing safe spaces, and empowering the LGBTQ community.
