Born in Mexico and then raised in the sunny state of Florida, Jorge Antonio Hernandez grew up as a dreamer destined to turn his dreams into reality. His father was an aspiring artist who against all odds was able to not only achieve his dream of becoming a musician, but also bring up his family along the way with him. Sadly, his father was deported when Jorge was a baby, later leaving Jorge to take place as the man of the house. Faced with adversity for being gay and at the time an undocumented immigrant, he stopped at nothing to make sure that every day that his single mother and two sisters would have something to eat. He took action for himself as well and joined a local charity that had after school programs where local kids in his neighborhood could express themselves freely and receive education assistance if needed. It was there he committed seven years of continuous community service and later received a scholarship for over 10,000 community service hours. It was throughout those years that he saw people he had helped in so much need – in need of food and clothing donations but also in need of healthcare. That put him on the path toward becoming a health care professional. He saw the opportunity to make a difference. His dream is to further his education and someday earn his bachelor’s degree in nuclear medicine technology.
