José Barbosa was born in Mexico and brought to the U.S. at the age of four, settling with his family in Northridge, California. As an immigrant he dreamed of having a career in the film industry, but quickly realized that a college education is crucial to success in the industry. José attempted to go to college many times, but he consistently faced barriers due to his immigration status. José finally received approval on his VAWA application for resident status in 2020. Since then, his life has changed tremendously, and the world has opened up for him. He enrolled at Los Angeles Trade Tech College, where he is focused on finishing his degree in business and civics. He gives back to his community by volunteering with The Shower of Hope, which alleviates common struggles for unhoused citizens. As a Buddhist, he often uses meditation to stay present and positive with a zest for life and people. José aspires to transfer to a four-year university to pursue a bachelor’s degree and eventually work in city planning.
