Kirsten grew up in the postindustrial lakeside city of Erie, Pennsylvania. She is the oldest of six children and still visits home often. Kirsten spent the majority of her formative years balancing rigorous academic expectations with a love of pop punk and concert going. After graduating high school, she moved to Santa Rosa, California to be with family living on the west coast and hoped to see more of the country. Undecided and aimless with the direction of her life, Kirsten pursued a long-distance relationship that led to her move to Columbus, Ohio, where she currently resides. While the initial relationship that sparked the move no longer motivates her staying in the Midwest, her community has anchored her for a sixth year. In Ohio she learned about feminism, her exploration of bisexuality and her passion for education. This self-realization came from two consecutive years of service with City Year, an educational nonprofit and much ambitious personal reading. Kirsten currently teaches for Columbus City Schools while working simultaneously to achieve her degree in human development and community engagement. Kirsten continues to share her love of hula hooping and shoe shining with her students as they learn to navigate social emotional wellness and foundational phonics. Her dream community role is to be a school librarian who works to bring equitable and accessible education to all her students.
