Raised in rural western Massachusetts, Marcel has long been drawn to libraries as safe spaces for LGBTQ+ people. With the support of Point, he earned his Master’s in library and information science in 2008 and then served as director of library services at Independence Community College in Independence, Kansas. A chapter about his experiences there appears in the edited volume Out Behind the Desk: Workplace Issues for LGBTQ Librarians (Library Juice Press, 2011).

More recently, Marcel has become active in the movement for open access to scholarly research. He is currently Open Research Manager at the Public Library of Science, and lives in Worcester, Massachusetts with his partner.
