Robert Gutierrez was born in Pasadena, California and raised in El Monte, California. When he was 2 years old, his mother died from complications of diabetes. He struggled through hardships such as bullying because of his sexuality, child molestation by a family member for six years, and when he was 15 years old and a high school freshman he lost his father to stomach cancer. Through great support of therapy, family, teachers, and counselors Robert had enough determination to pursue excellence in high school. He is the first person in his family to graduate high school and attend college; participating in Pasadena City College’s Honors Program. Robert is passionate about being an LGBT leader and role model for LGBT youth. He believes that teachers and students can work together to improve curriculum so that students have a better learning experience. He is already acting to improve education by working with Project P.A.S.S for the Monrovia Unified School District, where he tutors students. Robert is also doing personal independent studies and surveys focusing on improving math education through unique teaching styles and the use of computer science as a tool for homework assistance when tutoring is not available.
