Hawaiian Studies and Anthropology

She/Her

BIPOC

Shy is a native Hawaiian diaspora student who graduated Magna Cum Laude with an associate degree in liberal studies. She is a licensed hairstylist in Pennsylvania and Hawai'i and is currently studying anthropology and Hawaiian studies at the University of Hawai'i. She immerses herself in various aspects of Hawaiian culture and is reconnecting to her 'ohana, whom she met for the first time in 2021. She is passionate about cultural education and literacy and aims to open a community center focusing on ethnic studies and cultural exposure to help other diasporas reconnect. Her goals include earning a graduate degree, becoming fluent in the Hawaiian language, creating accessible housing for the houseless in Hawai'i, and reconnecting to Hawaiian holistic medicine. She hopes to leave behind a legacy, including a lengthy anthology of work regarding the Māhū community, Hawaiian medicine, astronomy, and ethnic studies.
