Meet Our Scholars

Somiyah DeMercado is a current freshman at Georgia State University majoring in film and media. Throughout high school, she maintained a 4.0 GPA while being involved in student government and tutoring students in literature. As the Teen Advisory Council secretary, she helped young people in her community find healthy ways to navigate mental health and prevent drug use. She intends to remain involved in community service in college. Somiyah's love for movies inspired her to pursue a career in the film industry. She plans to become an assistant director and scriptwriter and hopes to work with Marvel Studios one day. She spends her time crocheting when she's not studying or working on a new film idea. She sells her crafts to help fund her education.
