Travis grew up in the rural South Tennessee, a part of the country that is not very charitable toward LGBTQ individuals. His stepfather refuses to communicate with him now that he knows Travis is gay. Although growing up he had very little support, emotional or financial, Travis was the first in his family to attend college.
He graduated summa cum laude from the University of Tennessee, where he was the founder of several organizations that focused on both straight and LGBTQ youth. Before graduate school, Travis taught in Estes Park, Colorado, and Washington, D.C., in underresourced high schools full of students from poor, disenfranchised families. Travis is very concerned about the impact of homophobia on the development of all children and wants to work directly with individuals in need of support and encouragement through mentoring and program development.
