The Need for Trans Inclusive Educators

When most people think of Title IX – the 1972 law that prohibits sex discrimination in public schools – they think of how it allowed women to take strides towards equality in sports. At one point in time I fell into this camp of people who simply equated Title IX with sports. Growing up as […]

Lack of Queer Sex Ed is More Than Tragedy, It’s State Violence

For my community service project this year, I chose to compile sexual health resources that were specifically made with LGBTQ youth in mind. It felt like something that would be relatively easy to complete in my free time between my course load, job, activism work, and other on-campus commitments, as well as something that would […]

Affirming Identity Documentation for Michigan’s Trans Community

In my home state of Oregon, we vote at home via mail-in ballots. But in Michigan, where I go to school, I had to amble down to the local public library to cast my vote in person for the first time. The line snaked down a spiral staircase to the poll workers, where a man […]

Ask a Scholar: Is it harder to be considered by Point if you haven’t attended college yet?

Question: I was looking through the previous Point Scholars and it seems to me that the majority of the students are already college level and have more real world experience than I do. Is it harder to be considered for Point as someone who hasn’t attended college yet?   Point Scholar Grace Wickerson responds: Real world experience can […]

Fighting for the Global Good: LGBT Refugees and Asylum-Seekers

One of my favorite afternoon activities is my weekly card game. I tend to lose, and I am pretty sure when I occasionally win it is because the dealer is being kind and lets me. What is even more embarrassing is that I am losing to someone who is about half my age. I am […]

Expressing Myself by Writing About Others

By NBCUniversal Point Scholar Julia Horwitz There are a lot of reasons I love writing, but one of the more selfish ones is that I hate loose ends. It’s hard to resist tying ends that aren’t supposed to be tied yet; it makes sense that spoken word poetry was my first love. I’ll always believe […]

From the Courtroom to the Ballroom: The Next Steps of LGBTQ Equality

This summer I completed a 10-week internship at Lambda Legal’s national headquarters in New York through the generous support of the Elton John AIDS Foundation. Although the majority of my work focused on HIV research and outreach to marginalized communities, which forms the bulk of my current interests in LGBTQ advocacy work, being a part […]

#AskPointScholars Responds to Question About Projects Completed as a Point Scholar

Phyllis Mandler & Gary Elden Point Scholar Mary Susman says:  I have been a Point Scholar since 2010 and have had a wide range of experiences. I have completed different Community Service Projects each year, including helping plan a leadership camp for queer high school students, assisting a professor with her research on queer socialities, […]

Rickke Mananzala was born in Oakland, California to a military family and was raised in a number of different states. After being kicked out of his home at the age of 16 for being queer, he quickly pieced together a new adult life on his own. He moved to New York and became involved with […]

LGBTQ Scholars Will Not Be Erased

Your support is vital. This year, hundreds of homophobic, transphobic, and anti-LGBTQ bills have been proposed and adopted as law in states around the country. As the LGBTQ and allied communities combat these bills, Point continues to support LGBTQ students in higher ed though scholarships, mentoring, coaching and programming to help students find success at school. Join us in supporting the resilience of the LGBTQ community as anti-LGBTQ legislation sweeps the United States.
