What We Do

Point Foundation (Point) empowers promising lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) students to achieve their full academic and leadership potential – despite the obstacles often put before them – to make a significant impact on society.
Point seeks to build community and springboard a new generation of LGBTQ leaders toward success. Point does this through scholarship funding, mentorship, leadership development, and community service training, and is the nation’s largest scholarship-granting organization for LGBTQ students of merit.
Point’s work is vital because nearly one-third of LGBTQ students drop out of high school to escape the violence, harassment, and isolation they face there. As a result, many LGBTQ students say they are not planning to pursue opportunities for higher education.

How We Work
Point’s founders were a handful of successful business people eager to help LGBTQ students in need attain their higher education degrees, as well as provide these students with the kind of mentorship and guidance that they had benefited from in their own professional careers. Since its inception in 2001, Point has sought the partnership of philanthropic individuals, corporations, and foundations to supply financial support, professional guidance and a network of contacts for our scholars.
As well as providing financial support for education, Point provides leadership development training through its programs, conferences, and internship opportunities. Point also matches each scholar with a mentor who is a successful professional. Mentors help scholars design and complete an annual community service project that Point requires of each scholar as a means of giving back to community.
