Support Scholars and Create Change
Application Reader
Application Readers assist Point by reviewing and scoring the scholarship applications that are submitted each winter. Preferably, readers have a background in education, admissions, scholarships, counseling, hiring, or human resources. It is also very important that readers have a strong understanding of the issues affecting the LGBTQ community.
Point provides each reader with virtual training and comprehensive oversight of our systems as well as our scoring process, which allows each reader to work at their own pace from home. In order to become a Reader, you must submit a Reader Application, receive committee approval, attend all training sessions, and commit to reading at least 25 applications between the months of January and February.
Email Alejandro Ruiz to apply to be an application reader.
Please note that readers are also ineligible to apply for Point Scholarships in the future.
Coach or Mentorship
Mentors and coaches are a unique component of our Flagship and Community College scholarships. As positive role models, mentors and coaches are in regular contact with their assigned scholars and assist with setting academic, professional, and personal goals and navigating new environments. Mentors provide insights to students who often don't have the family or community support needed to get through the exciting and difficult experiences of higher education.
To apply to become a Point Foundation mentor or coach, please apply at the Point Connect website and create your profile as a mentor/coach applicant. After you complete your profile, you will be contacted by a staff Point member to coordinate an interview. All applicants complete an online application, interview, background check, and receive training.
Mentor & Coach Commitment
Flagship Scholars
Point matches each Flagship Scholar with a mentor. We ask that Flagship mentors commit to providing at least one full year of academic support to their matched scholar. Ideally, the duration of the mentoring relationship will span the remainder of the student’s time as a Point Scholar.
Point Flagship Scholars are undergraduate and graduate scholars receiving up to four years of support. Undergraduate scholars are working towards their bachelor’s degrees, some with the intent of furthering their education after graduation or beginning their careers. Graduate scholars are working to become experts in their field.
Community College Scholars
Point matches each Community College Scholar with a coach. We ask that community college coaches provide at least one full year of academic support to their matched scholar.
Point awards Community College Scholars with either a one or two-year scholarship. One-year scholars are in their final year of community college and plan to transfer to a four-year university. Two-year scholars have four semesters of community college left and plan to either graduate with an associates degree or transfer to a four-year university.
More ways to give
Create a Scholarship
Point provides an opportunity to donors to designate a scholarship with a “Name” that recognizes and acknowledges a specific source, whether it be the donor, an individual or an institution they wish to honor.
Leave a Legacy
Many donors demonstrate commitment to Point through bequests in their wills. Point works with these legacy donors and their executors to meet the wishes of the donor and the needs of scholarship recipients.
Fundraise for Point
Facebook users can set up online fundraisers to benefit Point, and invite people to participate. It’s also easy to add a donation button to your posts and encourage your friends to support Point.
