Which community college are you currently attending?
Glendale Community College
Which program are you pursuing and what about the subject intrigues you most?
I'm pursuing an ADT in Business and Administration with a transfer to a four-year college for Economics.
What are your education and career aspirations?
I want to research during undergrad and work for a nonprofit that helps develop equal opportunities programs for their communities, such as the LGBT Center or a school district board. I would use my skills to ensure resources are being used as efficiently as possible while still serving the humanistic purpose they
In your spare time, what do you enjoy doing?
I love roller skating, but most of all I love to sing. So I spend a great deal of any free time I get singing and even trying to write original music.
How are you practicing self-care during this difficult time?
The way I have been practicing self-care is by challenging myself to reach out for help when I want to hide and "do it all myself". No one is an island. I also have been practicing vulnerability, which has given me an understanding of those around me. All in all, some of my favorite things are choosing calming lighting, going on walks, and intentional skincare!
How are you adjusting to remote life and what are your tips to stay motivated?
My tips for staying motivated include creating "the places" you used to go to. I found that campus was a place for a mindset, just like the gym is a place for a slightly different mindset. I have been practicing dedicating different parts of my room to different things or choosing a park to study at instead of my desk. Most of all I recommend reaching out to the community, contacting local LGBT organizations for support groups, trying to find the online learning communities your school is trying to set up, and maybe joining a virtual meetup.com group such as 'Foreign Language Conversation'. Community is so important, and it's something we are rebuilding slowly.
As a Point Community College Scholarship Recipient, what is your message to other LGBTQ+ students?
You are all incredible and needed, each and every day that you wake up with a goal in mind. Not every day can be perfect but we can do our best to care for ourselves so that we can get ourselves to our next good moment. You are not alone and we all are going to make it through this hurdle.
