The Point Flagship scholarship for LGBTQ students provides financial assistance, mentoring, leadership programming, and more, to help LGBTQ students attending 4-year colleges or graduate schools achieve their dreams. Learn more about the flagship scholarship program and apply to join this year’s class.

Why did you choose your major or program?

I chose to study Government and LGBTQ+ Studies because of my interest in the intersection of public service and LGBTQ+ civil rights. I hope to use my education to pursue a career in this field where I can make a difference in the lives of people across the country.

What is a fun fact about you that few people know?

The judge who swore in LBJ on Air Force One after the assassination of JFK named her new dog after my mom!

What is your favorite song and why?

My favorite song at the moment is "Need to Know" by Doja Cat because it's upbeat and fun and makes me want to dance!

What is your current favorite streaming binge and why?

I just finished watching Hacks on HBO, and I highly recommend. It's funny and uplifting and I'd be lying if I said I didn't cry at the end.

What is your favorite hobby or activity you like to do in your free time?

I like to go kayaking in downtown Austin, where I go to school.

How have your identities (race, ethnicity, sexuality, gender) affected your college experience?

Being gay in a conservative state has inspired me to use my college experience to get involved in ways I can make a difference in my community for LGBTQ+ individuals - both on campus and in the greater state as a whole.

How do you practice self-care?

This summer, I am practicing self-care by establishing an exercise routine, prioritizing relationships with my friends and family, and focusing on preparing for post-graduation.

How are you adjusting to the "new normal" as we're emerging from this pandemic? Do you have any tips for other students who are going back to college this semester?

I am adjusting by establishing healthy routines that ensure boundaries for myself while also prioritizing relationships with others that were interrupted due to the pandemic. My advice would be to take care of yourself and don't pressure increased social interaction or activity as we transition into a world that is much more in-person and interactive than what we've been used to over the past year and a half.

This post’s responses were submitted by Patti Sue Mathis Scholarship recipient Isaac James (He/Him).

Isaac is currently studying Government and LGBTQ Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. Read more about the Point Flagship Scholarship for LGBTQ students program here.
